Celebrity Reader Interview: Rob Ryan

I was delighted when the artist Rob Ryan agreed to answer some questions for The Book Base about his reading habits and favourite books. My sister introduced me to Rob Ryan’s amazing paper cuts a few years ago, and I’ve been a big admirer ever since. If you aren’t familiar with his work, check out his website.

What were your favourite books as a child?

  • The Otterbury Incident by Cecil Day Lewis

What’s the best book you’ve read in the last twelve months?

The Bedwetter by Sarah Silverman

Who are your favourite authors?

William Saroyan and P. G. Wodehouse

When and where do you do most of your reading?

In bed before I go to sleep or lying on my bed at the weekend.

Approximately how many books do you read in a year?

Which book has influenced you the most?

Borstal Boy by Brendan Behan

What are you reading at the moment?

Role Models by John Waters

Which art books would you recommend?

Masterpieces in Detail by Rainer & Rose-Marie Hagen. It’s a fantastic and easy to understand introduction in how to ‘read’ paintings.

Celebrity Reader Interview: Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett)

I’m a massive Star Wars fan, so I’m absolutely delighted that Jeremy Bulloch, the actor who played Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, agreed to answer some of my questions about his favourite books.

What were your favourite books as a child?

The Famous Five books by Enid Blyton and Treasure Island.

What’s the best book you’ve read in the last twelve months?

Flying Solo by Jeremy Bulloch (Tongue in cheek)

Approximately, how many books do you read every year?

Not as many as I would like to.

What are you reading at the moment?

Ninth Judgement by James Patterson

Who are your favourite authors?

James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell

Which book has influenced you the most?

Most of Shakespeare’s plays.

Which book on acting or the movie industry would you recommend?

Actors and Acting by Alan Ayckbourn

Celebrity Reader Interview: Katie Melua

Katie Melua, the British singer-songwriter, answered some questions for The Book Base about her favourite books and reading habits.

What were your favourite books as a child?

Matilda by Roald Dahl. I loved reading from an early age and I really associated with Matilda.

What’s the best book you’ve read in the last twelve months?

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

Who are your favourite authors?

Iris Murdoch and Anne Carson

When and where do you do most of your reading?

When travelling, on trains, planes and automobiles.

Approximately, how many books do you read every year?

I like to read a lot of poetry, which I dip in and out of, so I sometimes have a couple of poetry books on the go as well as a novel. So, approximately 20, I’d guess.

Which book has influenced you the most?

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley – I read it when I was 19 and it blew my mind! Also, Decreation by Anne Carson.

What are you reading at the moment?

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

Which of your songs are you most proud of in terms of the lyrics?

Piece by Piece – it’s a very simple love song.
